Stand-ins

Stand-ins are young musicians and high school students from the host city of a particular year’s contest. Their job is to perform the entries as intended, not only to assist the technical team in regards to lighting, camera angles and visuals, but also to act as a guide for the participants prior to arriving for their first rehearsals.
After the stage assembly is completed, a series of technical rehearsals are conducted in the venue using the staging plans submitted by the participant countries (choreography, visuals, props, etc.). In order to make sure things are working as per the specifications of each delegation, the production team makes use of the stand-in to perform the entry in the place of the actual artist. The recordings are then sent to each country for review, which in turn can submit back requests for changes if they are needed. This allows each of the delegations to promptly start their own rehearsals without the need to wait on directions and technical issues as everything they need will already be programmed for them.
If an artist runs into some problems during the main rehearsal period such as illness, a stand-in from the initial technical rehearsals can be called at a moment’s notice to take their place, especially if they know the act well.
Stand-ins usually participate in the rehearsals for multiple countries in the capacity of a lead or backing singer, a dancer or a musician.
Some past stand-ins have gone on to take part in the Eurovision process over the years, such as participating in the national selections for their country or even becoming backing singers for other countries’ artists in the contest itself.
WATCH: Eurovision 2016 stand-in rehearsals showcase local talent
If you thought that Eurovision rehearsals only started when the acts arrived in Stockholm, then think again. SVT were hard at work filming rehearsals before delegations had even hit the ground, with a number of stand-in performers taking on the roles of the Eurovision 2016 acts. These stand-in rehearsals are filmed and then shared with delegations ahead of their arrival. It’s an opportunity to have a bit of dialogue ahead of rehearsals, and gives SVT’s technical crews an opportunity to tweak and adjust. A number of these rehearsals have now made their way online for us to all take a look at. It’s time to shine a light on the acts who helped to make Eurovision 2016’s production all the better.
Watch: Josephine Thunell’s stand-in rehearsal of “Sound of Silence”
Josephine Thunell is a 21-year old musical theatre student at the Kulturama school in Stockholm. SVT auditioned a number of students from the school and Josephine was one of the acts selected to take the stage, where she was picked to sing both Dami Im’s “Sound of Silence” as well as Agnete’s “Icebreaker”. After getting some rehearsals in, Josephine then took to the Globen stage — but it was far from an easy ride. Speaking to wiwibloggs, she explained it this way:
“It was all very intense, since we only got three takes if nothing went drastically wrong. In those three takes, you were to learn where the cameras went, which camera to look at when and also deliver a good performance! Most of the staging was done at a previous rehearsal so it was mostly just applying that staging to the actual stage and props”
This involved, for example, having to use the actual “glitter cube” that Dami Im performed on during Eurovision as opposed to SVT’s original prop: a table. Josephine also had to learn the precise hand movements for the holographic sequence in the “Sound of Silence” performance, which Dami herself struggled to time in the second semi-final. That is some real skill and dedication to learn so quickly, y’all! Thankfully for Josephine, she was able to be much more free with “Icebreaker”, as you can see below.

Whilst Josephine’s two performances look very similar to the final product, there are also other examples from the stand-in rehearsals that show where SVT had to make changes. Georgia’s “Midnight Gold”, for example, was much tamer affair in the stand-in version than the strobing light heavy affair we saw at Eurovision. One of the more surprising examples of this comes from the Swedish entry “If I Were Sorry”. Despite having had the experience at Melfest, the stand-in rehearser Sam Nilsson Ezeh‘s performance is almost blinding at times, with the lights on the screen behind far too bright for the camera to handle:

This is hardly the first time that SVT have employed this practice. In fact, y’all have probably heard of one of the artists who performed as a stand-in during the 2013 contest. Ellen Benediktson, Melodifestivalen 2014/2015 starlet, performed Amandine Bourgeois’ “L’enfer et moi” in Malmö. It was those performances that got her noticed by SVT and led to her Melfest appearances in the first place. Josephine admits that she would “love to compete in Melodifestivalen. Now I have a small taste of what it would feel like…I will keep striving towards it!”

Lights out on the first day of Eurovision 2019 rehearsals!
The 2019 Eurovision Song Contest stage has been graced by the presence of 9 artists from the first Semi-Final today, they rehearsed their entries for the very first time. And after rehearsing, the delegates from Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Slovenia, Montenegro, Hungary, Belarus and Serbia met with fans and press.
Today kicked off with the first of 2 scheduled rehearsals at the Expo Tel Aviv for the first 9 contestants. Rehearsals are a vital part of the process in developing the staging and smooth running of the Eurovision Song Contest. They allow delegations to perfect the vocal and visual display of their entry and communicate with the production team to get the very best out of their entry. It is a competition after all!

The day displayed the stage in all of its glory as the first glimpses of what we can expect to see in the live television shows became known. Here’s what the first 9 acts showed on stage.
Tamta has the honour of opening the first Semi-Final at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest which means she was the first of the 41 participating acts to stand on the Eurovision stage this year. Her rehearsal included an advance look at her energetic outfit and staging. Fans did not have to wait long for the first on-stage costume reveal of the year. The costume reveal has become something of an iconic Eurovision moment over the years and Tamta will be added to the notorious list.
Lake Malawi will perform sixth in the first Semi-Final but the group swapped places with Montenegro in today’s rehearsal schedule. Dressed in an eye-catching yellow sweater and jeans, lead singer Albert Černý quickly made friends with the stage and looked right at home in front of the cameras.
Finland’s global dance superstar Darude and singer Sebastian Rejman were next on stage. They were joined by a very prominent backing dancer for their first performance at Expo Tel Aviv. Look Away shines a spotlight on global warming and they made full use of the giant LED screen to draw attention to the situation.
In the last rehearsal before lunch, the four Polish stars, better known as Tulia, took to the stage in full traditional Polish dress to perform Fire of Love (Pali się). Despite releasing a black and white music video for the song, Tulia showed up in full colour with their clothing and staging effects.
Slovenia’s young hopefuls Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl were first on stage after the lunch break with the intimate rendition of their Eurovision entry, Sebi. Dressed in white, with a galaxy of stars swirling around them, they made full use of their rehearsal time and staging possibilities.
Rehearsing sixth today was the Montenegro, although D mol will sing second in the first Semi-Final on Tuesday 14 May. The six youthful singers (aged between 16 and 21) showcased their individual vocal talents as well as their harmonies as they performed their entry Falling.
Next on stage was the first of this year’s returning Eurovision stars. Joci Pápai took 8th place just two years ago and once again looked at home on the Song Contest stage. This time, Joci is performing solo on stage with visual photo displays of fathers from around Europe. With the imagery, the singer hopes to help express his song Az Én Apám which translates as My Father.
After a break in rehearsals, it was ZENA’s turn to step onto the Eurovision Song Contest stage. Her up-tempo entry Like It was performed with four backing dancers, two male and two female. The performance features bright colours, big images on the LED screens and strong choreography as the performers dance on and around rolling trunks.
Serbia’s entry for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest is Nevena Božović and she was the last participant of the day to rehearse. Her powerful Balcan ballad was performed with her alone on stage in a black dress with a leg slip. Nevena took the opportunity to demonstrate her vocal prowess to great effect.
Tomorrow, the eight remaining countries that will compete in the first Semi-Final of the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest will take the stage. Belgium, Georgia, Australia, Iceland, Estonia, Portugal, Greece and San Marino will all have their first rehearsals at Expo Tel Aviv.
REPLAY: Day 5 Rehearsals
It was the first day of second rehearsals in Rotterdam Ahoy, with 15 countries from the first Semi-Final giving their performances a little extra polish.
You can read the full Day 5 Live Blog, as it happened, here, and we’re back tomorrow at 10:00 CEST for Day 6.
Each delegation had 20 minutes on the main stage today, rather than the 30 minutes they had for first rehearsals. But all of them made the most of the time, knowing that it would be the last time they’d be able to perform before the full Semi-Final run throughs next week.
There weren’t many changes from the first round of rehearsals, demonstrating how prepared our participants were when they arrived in Rotterdam. A change of hair for Eden, a smoother exit from the giant dress for Russia, but otherwise it was business as usual.

The Eurovision.tv Live Blog team spent most of today in the Delegation Bubble, where all the acts hang out and relax when they’re not on stage. It’s full of beanbags and relaxation spaces, as well as a huge screen where all the acts can watch the live feed from the stage and cheer each other on.
Today we met Tusse from Sweden, Destiny from Malta and Stefania from Greece, as well as an unexpected but very welcome encounter with Sweden’s commentating team Edward Af Sillén and Christer Björkman, and Iceland’s commentator Gísli Marteinn.
Destiny
The drama of the day came from Ukraine, with lead singer Kateryna feeling unwell and having to miss the second rehearsal until she’s had the results of her PCR Covid test. This is a precaution that’s part of the Eurovision Covid safety protocol, and the rehearsal went ahead with the rest of Go_A and a stand-in singer. We have our fingers crossed for Kateryna and hope she’ll be back soon!
