One reason is that it has a single developer, but few individual developers are as successful with their masterpiece as Feather Family. Feather Family is an animal role play game. You can play as one of the many birds and participate in role-plays with other players, as well as explore the massive and diverse map. You can select various things for the birds like their coloration, texture and particle effects, as well as unique things for some birds like gender. There are three categories of birds:

Standard birds can be played as for free. They are mainly used by very new players, which then go on to play as more expensive birds. Examples of standard birds are Sparrow and Duck. Most of these birds are involved with humans, such as: chickens and turkeys used as poultry, sparrows and pigeons living around humans and pheasants being hunted by humans.

Unlockable

Unlockable birds can be accessed by using the main in-game currency, Feathers. They are the most commonly used birds. The unlockables category has the most birds. Some examples are Cassowary and Seagull. The current price range is 25 to 3,000 Feathers. These are mostly wild birds, though some have minor involvement with humans. This category is the only category which lacks birds with unique coloring or controls options.
Summer of Fossils Unlockables
The Summer of Fossils event happened in the summer of 2020. It introduced very expensive unlockable birds, all of which are extinct. Unlike any other birds in the game, their font on the menu is brown instead of light blue, and the background of their images are covered with bones (The only exception to this rule is Skeleton, which has a yellow name and stars in the background.).Every bird added in this event is 1,000+ Feathers. An example of a bird from this event is the Archaeopteryx.

Gamepass
Game Pass birds are unlocked by spending Robux on their game passes. There are only three: the Phoenix, Cockatrice and Griffin. They have special features that aren’t on the regular birds, such as unique customization options, animations and life stages. All Game Pass birds are mythological animals. All game pass birds also have uncanny abilities such as the Phoenix’s fire spewing ability, the Griffin’s cloud walking and the Cockatrice’s glowing eyes.

General Gameplay
Along with the birds, there are many things you can do throughout the game. For example, you can create Flocks or join pre-existing Flocks. These can help with organizing role-play or simply interact with other players. The main resource, Feathers, can be earned over time and is used to buy unlockables, with the maximum a player can hold being 10,000.
When selecting a bird to play, you have many customization options for your bird’s appearance like the bird’s colors, effects and texture. You can also enter your character’s name and short bio. The coloring allows you to change the coloration of your bird. Most coloring options a range of 40 colors, though things like the Beak or Legs will be limited to 16. The texture is the material that is used for the majority of your birds body, with four of these being free and the rest being exclusive to VIB members. Though the materials aren’t meant to affect coloration, certain textures can slightly change some colors. The effects are particles that emit from your bird and disappear after a short amount of time. Four of these can be unlocked via shirts and the rest (Just like the textures.) are exclusive to VIB players.
In addition, birds have many unique animations and sounds. They can do things like, among other emotes, call, which causes your bird to chirp, sit down and preen to clean your feathers. Most birds have a flying feature, too. Most birds have the same layout of Emotes and Abilities, yet the game pass birds and the egg have their own. The complexity of a bird’s model or animations mainly depends on when it was added, as some birds like Raven are quite outdated while more recent additions like Kelenken and Secretary have very advanced models..
There are various interactable things in the map, such as items, doors, specific areas and other birds. Birds can pick each other up using the Carry feature, which gives the option to carry the selected bird on the player’s back or in their beak, though this can only be done depending the size or life stage of either you or the other bird. Some areas allow you to click on them, teleporting you to them. These are normally perches. When carrying an item, it will appear in your bird’s beak along with an option on the top of your screen to drop the item. The items have no real effect, and are purely role-play elements.
The game’s map is split up into multiple sections called Biomes, which each follow a unique theme. All of these can be used for different types of roleplay and they vary from areas like forests or jungles to fantasy areas like Skylands or Fantasy Field. You can fast travel to these with the Teleport tool. Most biomes have their own magic tree, which follows the theme of the biome and acts as a fantasy element for the game.

Feather Family doesn’t have much lore, though the Summer of Fossils event had some actual backstory to it.
Summer of Fossils Lore
This event all starts with the Mad Scientist Penguin NPC, who was first added as a sneak peak for the Summer of Fossils. He was located near a frozen skeleton in the Ice Mountain and the player is able to speak with him. The scientist penguin talks about how they want to study extinct birds up close and learn more about them. He asks if you think the ancestors of modern birds were feathered just like modern birds, which references the theory of some dinosaurs having feathered bodies. He manages to bring back the Dodo, which starts the event. He was relocated to the new lab in the Ice Mountain. When you speak with him, he explains that he managed to clone and bring back the Dodo, and that he’s eager to bring back more extinct birds. The event continues with Archaeopteryx, Moa, Kelenken and Pelagornis though his dialogue stays pretty much the same, just just using the most recent SoF bird as the example. When the Argentavis was added to presumably conclude the Summer of Fossils, the scientist explains that he’s brought back 6 extinct birds, and that the player is free to explore the lab. However, the event got so much positivity that one final edition was added during October as a Halloween themed bird. On October 2nd, the event truly concluded with the final extinct bird, the Skeleton. When you go to the scientist’s lab, he is no longer present. Instead, a book sits in his previous location, which the player can read. The book is written by the scientist penguin himself, explaining how he quit his study of fossils. He explains that it started with him trying to bring back the Haast’s eagle. The resurrection failed and resulted in a monster between the states of living and dead, the monster being the Skeleton. He says that he has quit his study due to his guilt and that he’ll never go back to studying extinct birds.
Game Passes
Game passes are parts of Feather Family that can be unlocked with ROBLOX’s main currency, Robux (R$). Game passes are a common feature in ROBLOX, and Feather Family currently has four (Three unlocking birds, one unlocking advanced customization.).
