Маховик (англ. «reaction wheel») придает вращающий момент летательному аппарату и позволяет поворачиваться в космосе с использованием только электрического заряда. Таким образом, использование маховика доступно до тех пор, пока на корабле имеется электрический заряд. Именно это и было добавлено в версия 0.21, но простые безымянные системы были добавлены ранее.
Все командные модули, исключая Внешнее командное кресло «EAS-1», имеют маховик и могут создавать момент вращения. Добавление дополнительных деталей, создающих вращающий момент, обеспечивает более быстрое вращение. Размещение маховиков действительно имеет значение. Вообще говоря, они могут вызвать некоторые проблемы при расположении далеко от центра масс. Они функционируют следующим образом: фиксируют точку расположения маховика и вращают аппарат вокруг этой точки. Таким образом получится вращение вокруг чего угодно, но не вокруг центра масс. [1]
Для работы маховиков необходимо наличие электрического заряда. Электрическое потребление пропорционально вращающему моменту. В то время как командные модули, за исключением плоского корпуса зонда восьмиугольного профиля «Probodobodyne OKTO2», нуждаются в 0.1 E/с за вращающий момент в 1 КНм, все специальные детали нуждаются в максимальных 0.3 E/с, но предоставлении вращающего момента в 20 КНм, требующих только 0.015 E/с. Например, Командный отсек Mk1 может вырабатывать момент вращения до 2.4 КНм по осям, что требует до 0.24 E/с или 0.1 E/(с·кНм). Использование питания указано по одной оси, поэтому при применении маховиком максимального вращающего момента в двух осях одновременно, требуется вдвое больше энергии.
