How to Identify and Disable WhatsApp Read Receipts

Turn off WhatApp read receipts on your iPhone or Android device

WhatsApp is a popular instant messaging app with a slew of features including, read receipts. Read receipts let users know if and when a message is received and read. Some users aren’t fans of this feature. They feel pressured to respond immediately if the sender knows they opened and read a message. If you prefer not to have read receipts, it’s easy to disable this feature.

Instructions in this article apply to WhatsApp for iPhone and Android.

What WhatsApp Read Receipts Look Like

WhatsApp Read Receipts look like checkmarks. When you send a message, a grey checkmark appears next to the time stamp. Two checkmarks appear upon delivery to the recipient.

When the recipient reads it, two blue checkmarks appear. In a group chat, both checkmarks turn blue after every participant of the group chat opens the message.

If you don’t see two blue checkmarks next to a message you sent, the recipient hasn’t opened it, one of you disabled read receipts, the recipient blocked you, or one of you has connection issues.

How to Disable Read Receipts

Read receipts are a two-way street. If you disable read receipts, you won’t be able to tell when others have read yours.

There’s no way to disable the read receipts for group chats or play receipts for voice messages on Android or iOS.

Disable Read Receipts in WhatsApp for iPhone

You can disable read receipts on iPhone in a few steps, which turns the feature off for all one-on-one chats.

Select Settings from the bottom menu.

Select Account.

Select Privacy.

Turn off Read Receipts to disable the feature.

Disable Read Receipts in WhatsApp for Android

Turning off this feature on Android is similar to iOS and just as easy.

Open WhatsApp and select More Options (three vertical dots).

Select Settings > Account > Privacy.

Turn off Read Receipts.

The WhatsApp Message Info Screen

For more detailed information, the WhatsApp Message Info screen displays when your message was delivered, read, or played by the recipient.

To see the Message Info screen on WhatsApp for iPhone, open a chat with a contact or group and swipe from right to left.

To see the Message Info screen on WhatsApp for Android, open a chat with a contact or group, tap and hold your sent message, press the three-dotted menu, and then Info.

Отправляем сообщение группе людей без уведомления о групповом чате

Вы можете отправить одно и то же сообщение группе людей, но при этом каждый из них будет уверен в том, что это приватная беседа. Чтобы сделать это, нажмите на ссылку Broadcast Lists в левом верхнем углу главного окна программы. Выберите интересующих вас пользователей, введите сообщение и отправьте его. Check marks will appear next to each message you send. Here’s what each one indicates:

The message was successfully sent.

The message was successfully delivered to the recipient’s phone.

The recipient has read your message.

In a group chat, the second check mark appears when all participants in the group have received your message. Two blue check marks appear when all participants in the group have read your message.

Message info

For any message that you send, you’ll be able to see a message info screen, displaying the details of when your message was delivered, read, or played by the recipient.

Note: When a participant leaves a group, the Message info screen will still show the original information with all participants, including the participant who left the group.

Missing read receipts

If you don’t see two blue check marks, a blue microphone, or an “Opened” label next to your sent message or voice message:

To turn off your read receipts, tap More options

> Settings > Account > Privacy and turn off Read receipts.

Note: This won’t disable the read receipts for group chats or play receipts for voice messages. There’s no way to turn those settings off.

What Do Check Marks Mean in WhatsApp

You will see three types of checkmarks (or ticks) on WhatsApp chats – single, double, and blue. In individual chats, the single grey checkmark means that the message has been sent from your side. Two grey check marks indicate that the message was successfully delivered to the receiver. And, the two blue checkmarks mean the recipient has read your message.

In WhatsApp groups, the meaning of the checkmarks changes slightly. A single checkmark means that the message was sent from your side, but one of the group participants is yet to receive it (might be because of connection issues). Similarly, double checkmarks will appear when the message has been delivered to all the group members. Lastly, the blue checkmarks mean that all the members have read your message.

In case you don’t see blue check marks next to your sent messages, it could mean the person hasn’t seen your message. They might be experiencing network issues, or their phone might be off. But if you are sure that none of them is true, they might have disabled read receipts or blocked you.

When it comes to WhatsApp groups, read receipts do not impact group conversations. So even if your or someone else’s read receipts are turned off, the usual checkmarks and message information will be visible. The blue checkmarks will appear for the sent messages when all the participants have read the message. Tap and hold any sent message followed by tapping on the (i) icon to view Read by information such as delivery and read timings.

Strangely, WhatsApp voice messages treat the read receipts oddly. If you send a voice message to a person who has read receipts disabled, you will still see blue ticks when the person views the voice message. Inside message information, you will find the Seen and Played time.
